What We Believe

At Jacob's Well we are a group of people who believe that we are connected to the ancient Story of God and his people. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as well as the apostle Paul, the repentant tax collector, and the Samaritan woman at the well.

We believe that we are part of a grand story where God is our great King. we believe that he created people to live in community with himself and with his people. But there is a problem. Our relationship with the King has been fractured by our disobedience and our rebellion against him. Ultimately, people have chosen to commit treason and have become traitors against the great King and his Kingdom. This fact is corroborated over and over in the Bible. Furthermore, it is seen in the way we live our lives. While deep in our hearts we know that we have a responsibility to live for the greatest cause in the universe - the glory and honor of the King's Name - we continually fail to do so, creating a great distance between us and God.

We also believe that this Story has a hero. And that the hero is Jesus Christ, as revealed in the New Testament. While God chose to speak to his people in many ways in ancient times, his ultimate revelation of himself to his people is in his son, Jesus, the Word of God. In Jesus we see a bold and powerful man, full of the Spirit and charged with judging and waging war against the enemies of the Kingdom. Yet at the same time, he is gacious, gentle and patient with those who are genuinely seeking to be near God once again.

This is where we find ourselves in this ancient story. Our desire is to be near God once again, and we understand that Jesus, who is God become Man, is the only way to do so. Therefore, he is our Hero, our Model, our Deliverer, our very Life.

We embrace and celebrate the ancient roots of faith and all its mystery, even as we look forward to the day when our Savior returns, when we will know fully as we are fully known.
